2019-2020 Focus 203

More than 100 community members and District staff came to hear Superintendent Dan Bridges present the 2018 State of the District on September 19 and 20.

This event kicked off another important year of our two-way conversation, community engagement sessions known as Focus 203.

Superintendent Bridges shared points of pride, updated demographic and financial information, and updates on key initiatives from our Focus 2020 Strategic Blueprint.  Since the 2013 Future Focus 203 community engagement sessions, Naperville 203 has successfully implemented new Social and Emotional Learning curriculum, expanded Early Childhood and College/Career Readiness offerings, and transformed traditional school libraries into Learning Commons that encourage flexible, personalized, and inquiry-based student learning.

These interactive forums foster a meaningful dialogue and generate ideas that ultimately strengthen our learning community.

This year we enacted a community steering committee, headed by residents Khalid Smith and Melanie Manning.

Smith is a Principal Systems Architect at CSG which is a global leader in providing business support solutions for many of the largest Cable and Telecom providers in the world.  There he leads several development teams and works as a solution architect across several clients.

Khalid has lived in Naperville for eight years with his wife, Tameka. He has two children (a Freshman and a Junior) attending NNHS, and a third who graduated from NNHS and currently is a Senior at Purdue University.  He is very active in the community.  He is a co-founder of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. parent organization, an active 100 Black Men of Chicago mentor, a past member of the District 203 Diversity committee, and a recent volunteer for the DuPage County NAACP Junior ACT-SO achievement program.

Manning, originally from Joliet, has a B.A. in English from the University of Illinois in Champaign and J.D. from John Marshall Law School in Chicago. She practiced law in Will County at Tracy, Johnson & Wilson and the Will County State's Attorney's Office until 2014, when she decided stay at home.   

Melanie has been involved with the Joliet Junior Women's Club and Vice-President and President of the River Woods Home & School Association and chaired the 2017 River Woods Adult Social.  Currently, in addition to the District 203 FOCUS 203 Steering Committee, she is chair of the 2018 River Woods Adult Social, co-chair of the Dance Committee for the Naperville Central Home and School Association, chair of the Naperville Central Varsity Cheerleaders "Dine Out" fundraiser and Vice President of Membership for the Greater Naperville Chapter of the National Charity League.

Melanie has been married to her husband Kevin for 19 years and moved to Naperville in 2014.  They have two children: Holden, a 3rd grader at River Woods Elementary School and Helena, a freshman at Naperville Central.
