Naperville 203 hosted two Focus 203 sessions titled “A Community Conversation About Suicide.”

“It’s important for our community to come together and discuss how we can support our community and each other,” said Dan Bridges, superintendent of schools.

The keynote speaker for this event was Loyola University Chicago professor, author, and suicide intervention expert Jonathan Singer, PhD, LCSW.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for children age 10-14. He discussed with parents some myths and facts about suicide, national and local statistics, warning signs, and tips for parents, schools, and communities.

“Talk to your kids. You’re going to be there for the rest of their lives,” said Singer. “Want the best for your child. Not for your child to be the best.”

Following the presentation, community members participated in a small group activity, discussing the risk and protective factors students face today and what other resources they’d like to see in the community.
