Book Lists

Battle of the Books:

The Battle of the Books is a list of books chosen by a team of district teachers and public librarians. It is used as a reading list for the Literature Club and then for the Battle of the Books contest. These books are intended for grades 4-5. Most of the elementary schools in the district participate in this program.

Bluestem:

The Bluestem Award is an Illinois Readers’ Choice Award for grades three through five. Named in honor of the Big Bluestem which is the state prairie grass, the award may include both timeless classics and current titles, as well as books that have appeared on Monarch, Battle, and Rebecca Caudill lists. Twenty books are nominated each year, and children must read at least 4 of the books to be eligible to vote. The vote is taken towards the end of February and the results are announced in mid-March.

Monarch:

The Monarch Award: Illinois' K-3 Children's Choice Award is designed to encourage Illinois children to read critically and to become familiar with children's books, authors and illustrators. This award is named for the Monarch Butterfly and symbolizes the growth, change and freedom that characterize the emergent reader. The Monarch Award is given annually to an author and/or illustrator of a book voted as their favorite by participating K-3 children in Illinois.
